The .nl domain belongs to whoever is listed as its owner - not to the company that created the website. You can check it in a minute, and if it's yours, you'll get it back even if the contractor is silent.

How to check whose domain it is

Go to SIDN search engine (Dutch domain registry), enter the address and check who is listed as the owner - houder. It doesn't matter who technically operates the domain, but who is entered.

Three possible outcomes: you are the owner - the domain is yours; the owner is the contractor's company - its consent is required; hidden data - ask the company running the domain
Three possible outcomes and what to do with them.

Is the domain yours? You will get it back in 4 steps

  1. Choose a new companyHosting, agency or yourself - SIDN maintains a list of registrars.
  2. Ask your current contractor for the transfer codeHe has five days to do so – this is what SIDN writes. Write by e-mail, don't call: you need a trace with the date.
  3. Transfer the code to the new companyShe arranges the rest with SIDN. You don't report anything to the registry.
  4. SIDN confirmsIf everything is correct, the domain is transferred immediately and confirmation is sent by e-mail.

Hosting and website files

There is no regulation here like in the case of a domain. Request by email for a copy of the site and access to the dashboard, with a deadline - most cases end there. Don't pay “for unblocking”: the domain is returned via the SIDN procedure, and the website content can usually be recreated.

So as not to fall in again

  • Domain saved for your company from day one.
  • Access to the domain and hosting panel Your email address.
  • Question before signing: what if I want to move the site somewhere else?

The text applies to .nl domains. In the case of .com, .eu or .pl, the principle is similar (authorization code), but the deadlines are set by a different registry.
